Zwift vs Rouvy: Which Indoor Cycling Platform?
Indoor training platform choices have gotten complicated with all the features and pricing changes flying around. As someone who’s used both Zwift and Rouvy extensively over multiple winters, I learned everything there is to know about which works better for different riders. Today, I’ll share an honest comparison.
The Core Difference
Probably should have led with this section, honestly.
Zwift: Gamified virtual worlds. You’re riding through fantasy landscapes as a cartoon avatar alongside thousands of other riders. It’s social, competitive, and game-like.
Rouvy: Real-world video. You’re watching actual footage of actual roads while your avatar rides along. Less social, more focused on simulating outdoor riding.
Zwift Strengths
Community: Thousands of riders online at any time. Group rides, races, and events constantly happening. If you thrive on social motivation or competition, Zwift delivers.
Gamification: That’s what makes Zwift endearing to us who need external motivation — levels, achievements, virtual jerseys, unlockable equipment. The game-like elements keep people coming back.
Rouvy Strengths
Realism: If you want to preview a race course or ride famous climbs, Rouvy’s video approach feels more connected to actual cycling. Some people find the CGI worlds distracting.
Price: Currently cheaper than Zwift at $15/month vs $18/month.
The Bottom Line
Try both free trials. Most people have a strong preference once they experience both. Neither is objectively better — they serve different needs.
